About the Major
In the ELEM major, you will take a set of professional teacher education core courses that address topics such as child development, language development, reading methods, writing instruction, math instruction, assessment and instruction principles, legal and policy foundations, and classroom technology integration. In your final year, you will complete a full-time student teaching or internship experience in an elementary school, and be paired with an experienced educator to mentor you through your final capstone teaching experience.
Upon graduation and completion of licensure exams, you will be recommended to the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) to receive your Elementary Education K-8 Utah Professional Teaching License. The U’s Elementary licensure program prepares you to teach grades K-6 as part of the K-8 licensure recommendation; if you’re interested, you can also complete a few additional specialization requirements to be able to teach in K-8 classrooms.

Plan & Prepare
At the U, we plan for our students to have an exceptional Educational Experience identified by four broad categories we call the Learning Framework: Community, Knowledge & Skills, Transformation, and Impact. This major map will help you envision, explore, design, and plan your personalized Exceptional Education Experience with the Learning Framework at the core. In addition to assisting you in planning your coursework and navigating the requirements of your major, this map will help you incorporate other kinds of experiences to expand your knowledge, support your development, and prepare you for the future you want.
