About the Major

Russian at the University of Utah is a dynamic program with dedicated faculty committed to helping you craft a meaningful and effective learning experience. We will help you develop the skills to speak, read, write, and understand Russian in ordinary living situations as well as in professional and business matters. The coursework we offer will provide you with an understanding of important periods, figures, and trends in Russian cultural history and foster a deep and lasting appreciation of the rich Russian culture of literature, art, film and ballet.

Russian is the eighth most spoken language in the world and the second most used language on the internet; having proficiency in Russian will make you attractive to employers in a wide variety of fields. Russian pairs well with a variety of other majors (e.g., business, politics, or history) preparing you for a rewarding professional future. We are committed to supporting your chosen course of study, providing rich extracurricular activities, and facilitating learning abroad should you decide to pursue that option.

Learning Outcomes

  • Speak, read, write, and understand the Russian language in ordinary living situations as well as professional and business matters.
  • Understand one or more aspects of the linguistic structure of Russian and be familiar with some current research on second language acquisition relevant to this domain.
  • Produce academic essays characterized by critical thinking, coherent development, and thoughtful analysis in both English and Russian.
